If you listen carefully this time of year, you can hear the faint jingle of sleigh bells despite the fact that we’re still busy planning our Halloween costumes. Once the “ber” months arrive it’s time to start making my list and checking it twice – Christmas is right around the corner!

My girls are older now – practically grown at 24 and 17 – and when I think back to all those Christmases when they were littles, I’m hard pressed to remember what gifts were given. (Except for Chloe’s Tickle-Me-Elmo, but that’s a story for another day!) What I do remember vividly are the memories of the holidays when we chose to give the gift of a trip instead of things.

Complete honesty here. I LOVE giving gifts, so the thought of Christmas morning without a pile of presents under the tree made me nervous. But I also knew that we wanted to shift away from holidays filled with more “stuff.” If you’re nodding your head in agreement, read on! Here are my tips on giving the gift of Disney!

Consider your kids’ personalities

Would your kids be excited to learn they are heading to Disney World in an hour, or would they be happier with time to process the idea? While some would be thrilled at the thought of jumping up and heading to the airport immediately, others enjoy the anticipation and helping plan the details of the trip. Think about your kids and which scenario they will be most comfortable with.

Give small, trip-related gifts

There are items you’ll need (or want) to purchase for any trip, and Disney is no exception! Trip-related items make perfect gifts that are useful! Family t-shirts, MagicBands, a Mickey Mouse plush, or a pair or Minnie ears could be tucked into a Christmas stocking or given as “Tinkerbell gifts” during your trip.

Document the memories

No doubt you’ll come home with cherished photos from your trip. My girls loved having these printed out so they could flip back through the pictures and relive the vacation. Whether you create an elaborate scrapbook or just pop snapshots into a photo album, having these photos accessible will keep the memories alive for your kiddos!
