I’ve always said that at Walt Disney World, “the magic is in the details”, and one of the little things that has become a beloved park tradition is pin trading! Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious newcomer, pin trading can make your Disney experience a little more magical!

What is Pin Trading?

Pin trading at Disney began officially in 1999 and quickly became a popular activity. It involves swapping Disney-themed enamel pins with other guests or Cast Members. These pins can depict anything from favorite characters to iconic attractions, special events, or even limited-edition releases. Each pin tells a unique story and serves as a tangible memory of the magic found within the Disney parks. Pins make fabulous (and inexpensive) souvenirs, and interacting with Cast Members or chatting with guests about their collections are among my family’s favorite Disney memories!

Getting Started

If you’re new to pin trading, fear not! Getting started is as easy as finding a pin you love and trading it for one you love even more! Here’s how:

1. Purchase a Starter Kit: Disney offers starter kits that include a lanyard and a few pins to get you going. These can be found at various merchandise locations throughout the park, or you can purchase online before your trip!

2. Choose Your Pins: Browse through the extensive selection of pins available at Disney parks, ranging from hidden gems to must-have collector’s items. Find the ones that speak to you and add them to your collection. It’s also a good idea to add a few that you don’t love, so you have a few pins that you don’t mind giving up!

3. Start Trading: Look for cast members wearing lanyards or pouches filled with pins around the parks. They are always happy to trade with guests. Simply approach them, greet them with a smile, and ask to see their pins. If you see a pin you like, you can then offer one of your own for trade.

4. Etiquette Matters: Remember to be respectful and courteous when trading with cast members and fellow guests. Avoid touching their pins without permission, and always trade one pin for one pin

Cast Member Pin Trading Returns

Since 2020, due to health and safety protocols, Disney has utilized pin boards for trading to limit person-to-person contact. However, Cast-to-Guest pin trading has returned, and you’ll begin to see Cast Members wearing pin lanyards and pouches in the parks once again. There will even be Disney pins that are exclusive for Cast Member trading for a limited time. Keep your eyes peeled for pins from the new Hidden Disney pin sets across the Walt Disney World Resort!

Tips for Pin Trading Success

● Bring Traders: Keep a few pins you’re willing to trade in your pocket or bag. This makes it easier to engage in impromptu trading opportunities.
● Have Fun: Pin trading is about more than just acquiring new pins; it’s about the experience and the connections made along the way. Embrace the magic, strike up conversations with fellow traders and Cast Members, and enjoy the journey.

Pin trading at Walt Disney World is a cherished tradition that adds an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie to any visit. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a first-time trader, the magic of pin trading is sure to leave you with cherished memories and a collection of treasures to treasure for years to come. So, grab your lanyard, don your favorite pins, and let the adventure begin! And remember, it’s not just about the pins you collect, but the stories and memories they represent.
